What’s next in benefits: Defining future trends

The future unfolding in group health benefits.

The group health benefits industry has entered an era of exciting change. New technologies, innovative offerings and increased alignment between benefits providers have set the stage for steady evolution—fuelled by plan sponsors who increasingly make the connection between employee health, workplace productivity and business success.

Employees, however, remain the biggest unknown variable in this equation. How can we engage them to do more to manage their health? Will the coming changes be enough to meet their expectations, in an increasingly digital, on-demand world?

Thought leaders representing insurance carriers and benefits advisors explored these and other timely issues at the third annual TELUS Health Executive Roundtable early in 2019. Among the topics addressed:

  • The three-fold goal: improve plan member experience, enhance health outcomes, and get greater value for the benefits dollar.
  • The emergence of more flexible and creative benefits, such as telemedicine and virtual coaching for physical, mental and/or financial health.
  • Personalized messaging, pushed out to plan members, to motivate healthier behaviours, particularly among members with chronic diseases.
  • The growing role of predictive analysis as a decision-making tool for plan sponsors.
