A purr-fect guide to pet dental health

A purr-fect guide to pet dental health

In honor of Pet Dental Health Month, we're spotlighting this frequently overlooked aspect of pet wellbeing. Approximately 80% of dogs and 70% of cats develop dental disease by the age of three. If left untreated it can have severe consequences, compromising their comfort, overall health, and even their lifespan. Bacteria from untreated dental problems can enter the bloodstream, potentially leading to issues in vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Prevention through daily care

Many dental problems in pets are preventable with consistent and simple care. Daily brushing is a highly effective way to maintain your pet's oral health. While it may take some time for your pet to get used to this routine, the benefits far outweigh the initial challenges. Use a pet-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste to gently clean your furry friend's teeth, removing plaque and preventing the development of tartar.

Proper nutrition matters

In addition to daily brushing, the food you provide your pet can significantly impact their dental health. Offering them a balanced diet that includes dental-friendly treats or specially formulated dental care kibble can contribute to plaque and tartar control. Consult with your veterinarian or a MyPet vet to determine the best nutritional plan tailored to your pet's specific needs.

Regular vet check-ups

Preventive care is key to ensuring your pet's dental health, and regular veterinary check-ups are an integral part of this. Veterinarians can detect early signs of dental issues, provide professional cleanings, and offer advice on the best at-home care practices. Don't wait for noticeable symptoms; proactive and routine dental check-ups can help catch problems before they escalate.

If you have questions about preventing dental disease, ensuring proper nutrition for your pet, or recognizing symptoms they may be experiencing, book an appointment with your veterinarian or a MyPet vet. It’s never too late to initiate a good oral health plan into your pet’s daily routine. A healthy mouth is a happy mouth!
