2022 category watch: Impact of the pandemic

TELUS Health’s 2022 Category Watch examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on drug utilization for the treatment of four health issues: depression, pain, substance use disorder and weight management.

Without exception, trends in claims activity—including notable gains in the number of claimants for three of the four categories—were well established well before the pandemic began. While the public health crisis did have an impact, particularly during its first year, pre-existing trends appear to have rebounded in 2021.
