4 ways pharmacists can help support your mental health

If you're struggling with your mental health, you're not alone. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness in any given year. And while there's no one-size-fits-all solution for managing mental health conditions, pharmacists can play an important role on your healthcare team. Here are 4  ways pharmacists can help support your mental health.

1. Finding the right medication for you.
If you've been prescribed medication for a mental health condition, it's important to find a medication that works for you. That's where your pharmacist comes in. They can work with you and your doctor to find a medication that fits your needs and lifestyle. They can also answer any questions about your medication, from how to take it, what side effects you may experience, how quickly it should work and how to switch between medications or stop taking them altogether safely. 

2. Free health services.
Many pharmacies offer free health services to help you better manage your mental health. For example, some pharmacies offer free blood pressure checks and cholesterol screenings. These services can help you identify any underlying health conditions that may be contributing to your mental health symptoms. Some pharmacies offer other free services, including immunizations, medication reviews, diabetes screenings, and smoking cessation programs.

3. Support and education.
Your pharmacy team is here to support you on your journey to better mental health. We can provide information and resources on various topics related to mental health, including diet and nutrition, stress management, and exercise. We can also help connect you to community resources like support groups or psychiatric care providers.

4. Medication adherence.
Adherence to medicines can lead to healthier, happier lives. Pharmacists may assist patients in maintaining the proper dosage regularly using various procedures. The pharmacist-patient relationship is the most effective of all. Trust may help patients adhere more easily; packaging and technology can make adherence easier. For example, pharmacists prepare your medications in adherence packs, which sort and label the medications to be taken at certain times each day and for the week.
