What is medication counselling?

Medication, pills, bottle, phone, girl

Using a virtual pharmacy is undeniably convenient: skipping the pharmacy lineup, getting your meds delivered, and tracking the whole family’s prescriptions in your personalized online dashboard can help make medication management a breeze.

But TELUS Health Virtual Pharmacy can also help improve your access to quality pharmacy care, through included services like medication counselling with pharmacists who get to know you.

Not sure what medication counselling is? Our Ontario Pharmacy Manager Rachel Patel, BScPharm, RPh, has answers for you:

What exactly is medication counselling?

Medication counselling is an unhurried opportunity for your pharmacist to help you understand your medication and how to take it correctly.

During a counselling appointment, we talk about how and when to take your medication, what to do if you miss a dose, how to know that the medication is working, and if the medication interacts with food, vitamins or other meds you may be taking.

We also discuss potential side effects, self-monitoring techniques, and answer any medication questions that you may have forgotten to ask your doctor.

It’s a great way for us to build a trusting and positive relationship with each other.

How long is the virtual appointment?

These appointments are usually five to ten minutes long, and can be done over the phone or by video. You can book directly within the app once you complete your profile.

How should I prepare for the appointment?

Ensure you’re in a quiet, private place with a clear phone or internet connection, where you can really focus on the appointment. This is your time! I also recommend writing down any questions that you have for your pharmacist ahead of time.

Can my caregiver join me for the virtual appointment?

Absolutely. Caregivers can play an important role in making sure that your medications are working optimally, so it’s a good idea to include them in this conversation if possible.

What are the benefits of medication counselling?

Medication counselling can help you feel confident that the medication prescribed for you is appropriate, and it can empower you to take your meds safely and effectively.

It’s also an excellent opportunity for the pharmacist to gather information about any over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements and vitamins that you’re taking as well as confirm any food/drug allergies you may have. Based on this information, the pharmacist can make recommendations and contact your doctor if needed.

When should I book a medication counselling appointment?

You should book a medication counselling appointment every time a new medication is added to your regimen.
